Civil War Days

I found a picture of my great, great grandmother. She even looks like me.

Okay, not really. That IS me. Billie Creek Village wrapped up another annual Civil War Days event over the weekend. The old farmhouse was invaded by Confederate soldiers. I didn’t have a shotgun handy so I defended myself with a knitting needle. It seems they only wanted shelter from the rain though so I didn’t need to use it.

At one point I had to flee to the village to try to find a Union soldier to help save my son from being recruited by rebel soldiers. Unfortunately they were all off preparing for battle and were unable to help me.

It wasn’t until later when the Sgt Major’s wife informed me that most of the reenactors have two sets of uniforms and fight on whichever side needs warm bodies that I let my guard down. He didn’t officially sign up, but he’s already making hard tack and beef jerky. Something tells me this won’t be the last time I talk about reenacting.

My boy is heading off to war. *sniff*  Thank goodness they aren’t real musket balls.

That looks fun!! They have civil war reenactments here in Oregon and I thing it would be blast...however, it kinda sucks 'cause the civil war didn't take place over here. Kinda killed it for me. Your dress looks wonderful, did you make it?

I have two sons in the Union military. So far both have come out of the battles unscathed. I've a feeling yours will, too!

The men who invaded my porch were from up your way, Ken. The 12th SC/4th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. You might know them.

I used to do Civil War reenacting. (Still have all the cloths and stiff.) It was fun. My mom and I both did Civil War nursing and one event was at a rail/train museum. We got to ride on the trains to the battle field. We got to go on the battle field to help the wounded onto the train (back to the field hospital.)The doctor at that event used water filled pig guts to make (wounds)things more "real". Sadly that event is defunct and we don't take/have time to do reenacting any more.

I didn't make the dress but it is hand made. I just severely altered it to fit me. It must have been intended for a woman 8 feet tall.

Sounds like great fun. I loved the picture of Blanche on the side bar.

Christine, you look awesome, two sets of uniforms what a good way to ensure you are on the winning side of that battle.

Love the dress! We're gearing up for a huge reenactment here in Lexington in September and I'll be wearing similar attire. :)

You goof. You gave it away by smiling in your picture!

Sounds like fun :-) They are fighting the Battle of Cynthiana down here this weekend.

Christine -
The 4th Michigan we have here in the Detroit area do not cross-dress (ie portray the North AND the South). They are strictly Union.
One day we'll make it for a reenactment in your neck of the woods...gas prices...*sigh*...
