It's Always Something

So remember the chimney and brickwork we had done early this spring?

Yeah. I was never really pleased with the quality of work they did, but I was told I was being overly critical. Now, every time it rains there is water flowing down the chimney and pouring out the ceiling.

So we hired someone to come fix the roof. They did--and it is still leaking.

I am not impressed.

You'll notice that the rain soaked plaster ceiling is located directly above the chair where I sit to write. Now, every tiny sound around this old house makes me think the ceiling is coming crashing down on my head. I've mastered the duck and cover move, but I still feel like maybe I should wear a hard hat while I am working.

It looks like they made matters worse, and sadly we have rain in the forecast. I feel for you.

That would make me so mad! My mom had the same problem with her chimney and ceiling for months. Kept calling the brickmason, he'd come out and look and tell her nothing was wrong. Grr. Finally someone else got up there and checked, and there was a tiny gap in the flashing between the chimney and the roof.

That looks like a fairly wide area, like if there's one place leaking the water is getting in and then running along the wood items (what are the parts of a roof called...) on the underside of the roof in the attic.

Would getting up there in the attic with a flashlight during a rainstorm produce a clue?

Maybe there is more than one leak...

Oh nooooo. That's one of my most dreaded house problems. Leaky chimneys and roofs. I feel for you too.

Years ago in our first house every winter there was a leak, husband repaired shingles, roofer repaired ... when we moved out husband was in the attic and notice sunlight coming thru the gable on the end wall where the siding joint was between studs. Flashlight in the attic when it is raining is the best start ... good luck, bye lots of caulking and keep it handy for when you find the leak.

Oh the joys of being a home owner. Someone came to repair our roof and tore the gutters off the house creating another repair!
