Truth is Marching

I bought this layer cake kit a couple years ago at a quilt show. It uses Barbara Brackman's 1862 Battle Hymn collection. I've rearranged these blocks twenty times and I'm still not sure. Had it been up to me I wouldn't have used the same fabric for the setting triangles as the center blocks. I think I'll leave it up there for another day or so before I sew them together. Feel free to offer suggestions.

The back of the quilt will have Judie Rothermel's Civil War Tribute fabric, which also commemorates 1862.

I am making this quilt for my son who works as a Civil War soldier at a living history park. He also happens to be turning 21 this year in May and even his momma has to admit he is probably due for a grown up replacement for his ratty childhood blankie.

(Disregard the annoyed look, he secretly admitted under his breath that the blankie's softness can't be beat.)

It's going to be lovely!

I hope you don't mind me saying, I think the black blocks could do with splitting up a bit, there are 3 blocks on one diagonal line & 2 on the 3rd line down, if one or 2 of them were moved further down the dark blocks would be more spaced out.

Please feel free to totally ignore me.

Your son will love it.

If you feel unsure about the arrangement perhaps your son could arrange them!!

Quilt looks beautiful--waiting a few days is a good idea--you will either be happy or more objective with the arrangement

I think the setting you have works beautifully. You can always set your pieced blocks on another fabric to see if youd like another kind of setting but I love it the way it is. You can follow a pattern or use creative license and change it if something else will please you more. Love the backing fabric as well.

It is a beautiful piece of work and you may have arranged it the way you want by now but I like things to be in a matching pattern so would probably have the blocks around the center block match better - - - like have the same color little squares more similar like you did the black-squared blocks in the next circle outside that. What a great gift though for him.

If you don't care for the setting triangles (because they are also in the blocks), set them aside for another quilt and replace them with a different fabric. I like it now but if tweaking it a bit makes you happier do it!!
