I’d Kinda Like to Go to the Store.

Not that I have any pressing needs, I’d just like to go. There are more storms on the way and I feel like I should go. The roads have been cleared so in theory I could get there. Only one thing standing in my way…our driveway.

ice

Cindy’s son was able to chip the ice off of their driveway. They live in town. They don’t have a gravel driveway. You can’t chip ice off gravel. And it appears that unless you have about 1800 lbs of rock salt there’s no melting it off either. Even if I were to make it safely to the garage and get the vehicle out of the driveway, I would still have to skate across all that ice in the picture, grocery bags in hand, when I got home. Not to mention being greeted by anxious pooches wanting to know “what’s in the bag, what's in the bag, huh, huh, what’s in the bag.”

It would probably extend my life expectancy more if I just stayed home.

*Updated to add: I just wiped out while doing chores, hit my head first on the fence post then on the ground. This sucks. I measured the ice/sleet combo directly in front of the garage doors at six inches. It may be March before I get to the store.

Hi Christine.
Do you have a wood stove? If you do, you can take the ashes and sprinkle them on the ice. It should help the ice to melt. Maybe you could make a path out to where you animals are to make being out and about a little easier-and safer.

You must be okay if you made it back and were able to post but it's sounds positively dangerous out there. I hope your animals appreciate you.......

Makes me thankful that we just have snow. You have a great excuse to stay inside and quilt!!

My son figured out it was easier to ice skate through the yards to his friends house rather than to try walking in boots. Sliding around on your butt may be a safer way to move around, but it won't be an efficient way to get your chores done. Be careful! I think we are going to be living with this for a while.

Gheesh Christine....be careful!! And you probably better stay home if that's how your day started!

Sadly, we don't have a wood stove. I'd give just about anything for a truck load of sand right about now.

I understand about the thick ice--we have it here too. Hope you can avoid getting more. Please monitor that head bonk carefully. (I find TBI very scary!) Wishing you a speedy melt!

Break out the yarn and make those socks!

I hear you for wanting out. Jeff went to work yesterday and today (to Indy) but I don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon! The county plow has been by so the roads are open - just still full of ice. No school, of course.

Be careful on the ice. If you can, have one of the guys (or you) make a spiked walking stick or two, if you don't have cleats to wear. Just put some nails in a thick dowel or small width board that you can walk with.

May I suggest wearing a helmet when you step outside? Seriously, you could kill yourself whacking your head around like that! Glad you're well enough to form a coherent post and we don't need to call the EMTs!

Christine!! No more going outside for you - not unless you have a helmet. Certainly someone in your house has a bike helmet (lol) you could borrow, right?
(Seriously, though, head injuries are no joke - please be careful!!)

OUCH!!!

Take care! People have been seen in Westfield ice skating in their back yards - with real ice skates.

Oh my God, Christine! I'm glad you're "OK". Last year, I discovered that barn lime also makes a pretty good non-slip surface on ice and packed snow. Oh, but you REALLY need to be extra careful out there. Not that you need me to tell you that but please know that a whole lot of people care and are counting on you to stick with us for a long time to come!

Gosh, I'd live to join you on a trip to the coast one day...

Owww, oww. Poor you.

I don't think I've ever seen ice as thick as it is in my yard.

That fall is scary. You have to figure out a safer way...

DO NOT play with head injuries!
Get it checked, even if you *think* you're okay!
You might wanna have someone else drive, though. I think it's slippery out there.
=-)

Not good, I know this is obvious but you really need to be careful.

Hope you are feeling okay. I too live in Indiana and have been slowing chipping my way out of the frozen Tundra. I fell once, hitting my right hip & knee. I am so tired of this weather I can't stand it! Hang in there, Spring is a-coming.

So far I've not fallen, knock on wood, I don't want to jinx myself. This dusting of snow has given me more traction, but I'm so over this weather!

I fell by the barn, when I was getting hay. Only hurt my pride. My daughter from Michigan called on Thursday night several times and I didn't answer - I was sleeping. The last time she called, I heard the phone and answered. She had already called my sister and was ready to call my daughter in Bloomington, IN. She was happy to know that I wasn't injured or dead. Hehehe.
