Rain, Glorious Rain.

I’ve never been so happy to see a wet and cloudy day. My body simply couldn’t handle another day in the garden. I can lift my arms to type, but if I have to bend over to pick anything up today it’s staying on the floor. The funny part of the weekend included a visit to my brother’s new maintenance-free condo Saturday night . I couldn’t help note the irony. Perhaps he’s onto something?

Anyhoo, Nancy asked why I planted marigolds along with all the vegetables and I thought that was a valid question. It’s all about companion planting. Some plants get along well and actually help each other, while others don’t get along at all. Marigolds just happen to be good friends with tomatoes because they deter whiteflies. Nasturtiums do the same and even deter wooly aphids and cucumber beetles. So I set up a barrier, so to speak, of companion plants to give the tomatoes a fighting chance. The fact that it will help make the garden look pretty is just a bonus.

It's gonna be pretty! We have had rain, rain and more rain for the past two weeks. This week looks like more of the same so working in the yard is next to impossible!

I guess I better plant myself some marigolds!

Thanks for the pointer.

It's raining today here in NE Indiana and like you I'm so happy! I spent all weekend, hauling compost out to the garden and getting it planted. I am looking forward to the day off!

I've been following for a bit and I really love what you are doing with your place. We also are slowly bringing an 1860's farm house and property back into focus! Your garden inspired me to rethink fencing. Keep up the GREAT work!

I knew about the marigolds, but not the nasturiums! Don't you just love it when it rains after you plant your garden? It is raining here today, too. I'll take some credit; I watered the garden yesterday (it works like washing the car). The plants always seem to love God's watering better than mine!

I was so delighted to see you had stopped by. I thought the "thought for the day" was great, too!

I have planted marigolds in with my tomato plants for years. They are wonderful "bug guards". I also plant dill weed in with the cucumbers and cantelope.

The rain makes the new plants just jump up out of the ground.

Down here in southern IN we have had rain FOREVER! I feel like we live in the rain forest and you should see my plants! HUGE.
My old body is hurting, too. I couldn't get out in the yard this past weekend and I scrubbed and cleaned like a lunatic. Lunatic behavior= "ouch."
hug you, Cheryl

Like Michelle said, I knew about the marigolds but not nasturtiums. That will look so pretty together, and keep the pests off of your tomatoes, too. I planted some heirloom tomatoes today called Constoluto Genovese. We'll see if I can keep 'em alive.

Do you know anything that will deter squirrels? They seem to like to sit right next to my heirloom tomatoes and break off branches, little varmits. I have nothing against them, generally, but enough is enough. Buggers.

Not off the top of my head, Kim. That's why we ended up fencing our garden in, too many varmits. My Mom likes to shoot a BB gun at them, but I can't say I'd advise that approach. Although she claims it works...
