The hens have really let themselves go around here. Look at her, she only has one tail feather.
The Fat Bottom Girls are molting like nobody's business. It looks like a chicken or two exploded inside the coop. Egg production is a quarter of what it was. I'm going to have to go crack the whip and get 'em back in shape. I may need to call Bob and Jillian in on this deal.

You crack me up!
Bob and Julian, LOL!
My chickens all look like they have been in a bar fight or two.
Can I ask the craziest question of the year? How do you keep chickens warm enough in the winter and keep their eggs from freezing?
Rita,
Not crazy at all. On the coldest of days (those well below freezing) we run a heat lamp in the coop. It doesn't keep it warm by any means but prevents them from getting frostbite. We also have South facing windows for passive solar heat during the day. We have to gather eggs several times of day to keep them from freezing.
My roosters are looking like they're having a 'bad hair day' as well. I hope the new feathers come in before it gets REALLY cold!
We've had hard freezes the past two nights.
I have a Rhodie with one tail feather like that, and our egg production is down, too. Fortunately they don't all molt at once, it seems. The Welsummer molted a month or so ago.
Too funny! Please don't call Bob and Jillian. They'll just be too hard on the bird, causing more stress!
My hens are in the cycle of shame too. Mine are mostly naked.
